Today, the Reds jet off to the United States as the next stage of the Reds’ pre-season tour gets underway; with most of the team back together again they’ve wasted no time in catching up.
Earlier, at Melwood, Virgil van Dijk was with Jordan Henderson as the Dutchman discussed his fitness: “30 minutes is reachable, because at 28… Listen, 30 minutes with this big body, running…”
Henderson cracked up at that, after which, with perfect timing, Trent Alexander-Arnold walks in looking somewhat self-conscious but definitely looking stronger and more filled out.
It wasn’t lost on Van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum, who asked him whether he had been going to the gym and if he’d gained muscle weight.
Trent’s smiling retort to Van Dijk’s weight gain question was: “I’m still faster than you.”
With audible laughter behind him, Van Dijk jokingly replied: “Faster?! Come on, come on, show him the stats.”
Although it seems like Virg is just having a laugh, he was actually the fastest player in the Champions League last season! Sprinting back in the first-leg of the Barcelona semi-final, we obviously raced into the lead in the reverse fixture and got over the finish line in Madrid.

This might just be a hugely meaningful interaction with all the lads together, but it’s clear to see that they all get on; team spirit and camaraderie will be indispensable in this side achieving its goals.
