Van der Vaart ruins ‘Sunday League’ Maguire in savage van Dijk comparison

Former Tottenham midfielder Rafa Van der Vaart launched a fairly scathing attack on Manchester United’s central defender Harry Maguire yesterday.

In fairness, the Englishman had a decent game – and we think he’s a solid, if overpriced, defender – but the Dutchman clearly disagrees.

“When I go to see an amateur club on Sunday, I can find 3 players who can play like him,” he told Dutch television during United vs. Liverpool, translated on Twitter by @TheEuropeanLad.

“I mean that. It might be silly to say it but he won’t hear it anyway.

“We are talking about a €90M signing here. Then Van Dijk is worth €300M.”

We remember when United fans mocked us for paying £75m for van Dijk – but it’s ended up being a complete bargain and perhaps the most influential transfer in Liverpool winning the Champions League last season.

So the fact they went and paid an even larger sum for a clearly inferior defender is quite funny.

Liverpool should have beaten Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s unadventurous side, but the fact is we didn’t play well enough and missed Mo Salah.

The performance was a wake-up call, especially for the midfield, who were not up to scratch.

As a result, we think either Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or Naby Keita will start against Genk on Wednesday and maybe Spurs on Saturday.
