Dominik Szoboszlai was among Liverpool’s five goalscorers in their 5-1 drubbing of Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night, with his strike capping a wonderful performance for him and his team.

The Hungarian netted his second goal of the season with a fierce 20-yard strike in the 70th minute as the Reds ruthlessly put their hosts to the sword at Deutsche Bank Park, and journalist Bence Bocsak was left proclaiming an ‘absolute masterclass‘ from the 24-year-old.

The statistics from the midfielder’s performance in Germany certainly make for good reading – he also claimed an assist for the corner kick from which Ibrahima Konate scored, along with completing 105 out of 110 passes, winning 100% of his duels and executive five key passes (Sofascore).

Slot underlines Szoboszlai’s importance to Liverpool

Speaking to the media after the resounding win in Frankfurt, Arne Slot pointed to one statistic which accurately reflects the importance he places in Szoboszlai at Liverpool.

The head coach said (via liverpoolfc.com): “Dominik, again, had a good performance. Since I’m here, he’s one of the players that, maybe after Virgil [van Dijk] and Mo [Salah], has played the most minutes for me. That tells you what I think about him.”

Szoboszlai has been virtually ever-present this season

The numbers are there to back up Slot’s point about the Reds’ number 8 being one of his most-used players during his reign at Anfield so far.

Along with Van Dijk, he’s had the most game-time for Liverpool so far this season with 1,080 minutes on the pitch. In fact, when excluding the Carabao Cup tie against Southampton (when we had a much-changed line-up), they’re the only two ever-presents for LFC in the current campaign (Transfermarkt).

As the table below illustrates, the Hungarian has played the fourth-most minutes in total for the Merseyside club since the current head coach took charge in the summer of 2024.

Most minutes played for Liverpool under Arne Slot via Transfermarkt
Virgil van Dijk 5,517
Mo Salah 5,440
Ryan Gravenberch 4,961
Dominik Szoboszlai 4,509
Alexis Mac Allister 4,110

Szoboszlai is making the most of his time on the pitch, too, leading the way in Slot’s squad for a number of underlying performance metrics.

As per FBref, the 24-year-old has recorded more shot-creating (51) and goal-creating actions (7), won more tackles (16) and posted more ball recoveries (70) than any of his teammates, along with making the joint-most blocks (11) and the second-most progressive carries (31).

The Hungarian has even put in some strong performances at right-back in the early weeks of the campaign, but he again showed last night that he’s best utilised in his customary midfield position, and he proved in Frankfury why his coach continues to select him in almost every game.
