Liverpool midfielder named as one of the 10 slowest players in the league

Given we are one of the fastest squads in the league these days, it might be surprising to learn that one of our lads has been named in a list of the top 10 slowest players in the league.

That’s right, Brazilian stalwart Lucas Leiva is the sixth slowest player in the top flight according to Opta data (cited in Echo). (We can only assume they didn’t measure Alex Manninger’s pace!).

The stats were compiled by logging the top speeds reached by every player who’s played so far this season.

Lucas has reached a top speed of 29.37km/h, putting him just ahead of Everton’s Gareth Barry.

The slowest player in the league is ex-Red Charlie Adam. Another former Red – Peter Crouch – along with Cesc Fabregas, Shaun Maloney and Olivier Giroud complete the top five.

Lucas has only started one league game this season – the 4-1 win over Leicester – but he has also started two EFL games.
