Given the inevitable butterflies that penalty shoot-outs provide, it’s reassuring to know that we’re actually REALLY good at them.
Tonight’s win over Stoke means we’ve won 11 of our last 13 tiebreakers (the two losses came against Besiktas last season and Northampton in 2010) (via lfchistory.net). In fact, since penalty shoots became “a thing”, we’ve only ever lost three times, giving us an impressive win percentage of 83%.
It’s a figure that means we have the second-best record in the Premier League (behind Villa), and have won more shoot-outs than any other English side. For the record, Newcastle have the worst record, having won just one of the nine shoot-outs they have been involved in (via Mail).
Given our stats, it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that we managed to win tonight.
Emre Can provided our only miss, as Lallana, Benteke, Firmino, Lucas, Milner, and Allen all hit the back of the net.
