Luis Suarez paid a surprise visit to Melwood today, and explained why by revealing to the club’s official website that Liverpool are ‘so important in his life’.

The Uruguayan took advantage of a rare holiday – Barcelona are without a fixture until Saturday – to visit some of his former Liverpool teammates and watch them train.

The 29-year-old left Anfield in 2014 and has since established himself as one of the best players in the world – he has 42 goals in 41 games for Barca this season.

But Suarez admitted that the Reds maintain a place in his heart.

He told Liverpool’s official website: “It was fantastic to see the lads. The people that work here are really nice and I miss them, so I wanted to come and see some friends. I have really good friends here.

“I had a really good moment here in three and a half years and when you have a really good moment in your life, it is something you remember.

“I always try to watch the [Liverpool] games and look out for the results. I am very interested in how Liverpool are doing because they are so important in my life.”

Defender Mamadou Sakho, who played alongside Suarez in the 2013-14 Premier League title charge – uploaded a video to his Twitter account of him reunited with the South American.
