Lallana claims Liverpool players wanted United draw

There were synchronised groans and cheers when the draw for the last 16 of the Europa League was made two weeks ago.

In one sense, a draw against Man United is what football is all about – taking on your biggest rival in a game of massive importance. On the other hand, it would have been nice to avoid them, at least until the later rounds.

Either way, Adam Lallana has said all our players were desperate for us to come out of the hat against Van Gaal’s men and they were delighted when it came to fruition.

“It’s mouthwatering, really,” Lallana said (via Echo)

“The manager mentioned to us that he wanted the tie. It’s well known he was happy and excited for the draw. As players this is what you want – big games with big pressure, especially when you come out on top. Everyone is up for it.”

Lallana went on to reveal the whole squad wanted revenge for the recent run of results against our foe:

“The way results have gone against United over the last couple of seasons, it is a chance to put things right and get some revenge.

“We were very unfortunate in the last game against them. We just lacked a killer instinct. They got one through (Wayne) Rooney late on but our aim is to put that right over the course of the two legs.

“The manager said before the Palace game that was a chance for us to get some revenge on them as they had beaten us. It’s the same kind of reaction against United. It’s massive.

“I’m well aware what’s at stake. There is something special about it being a night game. We want to go into the second leg with a lead. I have been here long enough to realise what it means to everyone at the football club.”
