Five of our players were involved in England’s 2-1 friendly win over Australia at the Stadium of Light on Friday night.

For England, Nathaniel Clyne, Jordan Henderson, and Adam Lallana all started. Brad Smith started in defence for the Socceroos.

James Milner played the second 45 minutes after replacing Jack Wilshere. Lallana was the only one of the starters who didn’t complete the 90 minutes, he was taken off for Wayne Rooney at half-time. (via BBC).

In contrast, it was a torrid night for Daniel Sturridge. The striker hasn’t trained since joining up with Hodgson’s squad after the Europa League final, and he had to watch his replacement Marcus Rashford score England’s opener after three minutes.

The England boss has until midnight on Tuesday to confirm his 23-man final squad, meaning the 26-year-old faces a huge battle in his bid to make the team.

Obviously, we’d be gutted for Daniel if he did miss out – but from an entirely selfish perspective, it would be great news for Liverpool. There is nothing that player needs more than a period of rest and a proper pre-season.

Rooney bagged England’s second, while a late own goal by Eric Dier got the Aussies on the scoresheet.
