There’s been a lot of talk about the potential signing of Sadio Mane this summer, with the rumour mill going into overtime regarding the Senegalese international. Mirror reporter David Anderson claims Jurgen Klopp has “stepped up” the pursuit of the Southampton star now, with Mane set to be this summer’s marquee signing due to the Mario Gotze deal seemingly now being dead in the water.
Despite the constant links over the last few transfer windows, it’s unclear whether there was ever any chance of us landing Gotze. The player himself has apparently claimed that a move to Anfield would be a step backwards in his career (via the Express), and after months and months of speculation it seems like we may have finally given up on trying to convince him otherwise.
Anderson believes that £30m will be enough to land us Mane this summer, but insists that he will be our “big summer buy”.
Southampton want £40million for Mane, but it looks like a fee of £30million can be agreed, just two years after he joined for £11.8million.

Liverpool have stepped up pursuit of Mane in recent weeks because of Mario Gotze’s reluctant to join them. Mane will be their big summer buy

While Mane looks like he’d be a solid signing, it’s questionable whether most fans would be happy if he were our marquee signing. That’s not to say they’d be any happier with Gotze – who hasn’t performed particularly well for a long time – but would most fans be content with Mane as our major signing this summer?

We do look set for a busy summer in the transfer window, with Klopp getting his first full pre-season in charge of the side to make the changes he wants. There will hopefully be a number of signings made alongside a player like Mane, and hopefully we set ourselves up well for next season.
