Anfield legend believes red card record shows how referee threatens to play key role in the derby

A fiery match-up consisting of crunching tackles and heating confrontations as well as lots of goals is what the fans want when it comes to the Merseyside derby.

Things boiling over between the two sets of players during Monday night’s game is sure to see referee Mike Dean have a crucial impact.

While making his match prediction, Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson has outlined how significant a role Dean could have when the city rivals clash for the first time this season.

He said: “I think Dean is a very good referee but he has shown more red cards per game than any other official to be in charge of more than five Premier League matches this season, and how he handles those challenges – from both teams – will be a huge factor.”

“These are always just absolutely mad games and, whoever is top or bottom, form has absolutely no bearing on the outcome.”

“I am going to go with a draw, purely because I don’t know what is going to happen.”

Neutrals love a red card or two in the derby. We won’t mind as long as those in Red avoid becoming the recipients.

The excitement from Everton’s dramatic mid-week win over Arsenal means there is a real buzz surrounding tomorrow’s game in terms of league positions meaning nothing and the idea that both teams are capable of winning.

A good game is what everyone wants. We expect nothing other than a feisty contest.
