Real Madrid could trump Liverpool for no.1 summer target

This is about as typical as it gets…

Every Liverpool fan knows that we’ve made Julian Brandt our no.1 summer target (the Echo has mentioned it on a daily basis throughout 2017, it seems), but we may now face competition from Champions League holders Real Madrid.

Zinedine Zidane had scouts watching the 20-year-old Germany international last night, during Bayer Levkerusen’s 4-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

They have more financial clout than us, but Brandt’s chances of playing regularly for Real Madrid are virtually zero so long as Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo are fit.

Brandt would have to fight for a first-team starting spot at Liverpool as well, but his chances of game-time would be much higher, under less immediate pressure, too.

Last summer, we lost out on Mario Gotze to Borussia Dortmund, but luckily ended up with Sadio Mane instead – so we’re not suggesting it would be necessarily be catastrophic if we missed out on Brandt. He is a player of immense potential though, proven by Madrid’s interest, so we hope we can still get a deal over the line.
