LFC submit £17m bid for Van Dijk alternative [Sky Italy]

Liverpool have made an opening £17m offer to Lazio for their Dutch centre-back Stefan de Vrij, ironically Virgil van Dijk’s partner for the Dutch national side, according to Sky Italia – via Lalaziosiamonoi.it.

We’ve been reported by Southampton to the Premier League for ‘tapping up’ Van Dijk, so us signing the superb 25-year-old is not going to be done quickly – especially with the Saints putting a £75m price-tag on his head.

Liverpool are hopeful of securing Van Dijk for closer to £60m, with the defender agreeing privately to an Anfield switch, but Southampton are going to make life very difficult for us.

Sky Italia reckon we’ve submitted an official offer for De Vrij instead, showing Southampton we’re not afraid of moving on to targets new.

They do however suggest that his Serie A club want £30m and that our bid will be rejected.

De Vrij is 25-years-old, and despite enjoying consecutively impressive seasons with Lazio, is a very injury-prone defender. Last term for example, he picked up six separate injuries – more than Daniel Sturridge.

We reckon this offer is to let Southampton know they’d be crazy to walk away from £60m and keep an unhappy player.
