Van Dijk won’t want to sign for LFc anymore – Owen Hargreaves

Former Bayern Munich, Manchester United and England midfielder Owen Hargreaves thinks Virgil van Dijk may reconsider a potential future move to Liverpool because of how little protection he’d get at the back.

Hargreaves has suggested that our tactics are so offensive, they make central defenders look worse than they actually are – something which could have affected Dejan Lovren (who looked so brilliant at Southampton).

Hargreaves told BBC 5 live: “I would want to play as a centre-back where I was a little bit protected, where I had people in front of me, because if you look at look at Liverpool and Manchester City, van Dijk is not going to fix Liverpool.

“As good as he is, and he’s one of the best, he’ll play for Barcelona or Real Madrid one day, in my opinion he’s that good.”

It’s not a ridiculous point, in fairness. Klopp’s tactics are brutally attacking, which is why we score so many goals – but also let them in at the back.

Would Lovren and co. look better under, say, Rafa Benitez? Yes – probably.

But you can be sure that if Southampton did eventually agree to sell van Dijk, he’d jump at the chance to join Klopp.

If Liverpool had a centre-back of van Dijk’s nature, who could lead the backline and instruct those in front of him of their defensive responsibilities, we may just fix our problem.
