We’ve been enormous advocates of Coutinho in a deeper midfield position ever since the idea was mooted early on in 2017.
He first showed glimpses of genius there against West Ham last season, scoring a brace and laying on a beautiful assist for Daniel Sturridge at the London Stadium.
But due to Sadio Mane’s absences this term, Jurgen Klopp has been often forced to field Coutinho on the left of the front-three – a position he still plays exceptionally.
However, versus Southampton at the weekend, Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino started up front, allowing Coutinho his probing midfield role.
His creativity from this position was mindboggling. In the video below you’ll see quick feet, dribbling, passing, driving runs and jinking ones. Southampton’s midfielders couldn’t get near him.
On top of this, he produced a sumptuous assist and a goal. The ball to Mo Salah was one a handful of players in the world are capable of, and the goal showed predatory finishing instincts.
We might not be able to enjoy Coutinho forever, so while he’s at the club and produces performances like this, fans should sit back and wallow in it.
