Liverpool join race for Mo Salah’s €8m ex-teammate

Liverpool have supposedly turned their attention to Alisson Becker as they look to find a long-term solution to their goalkeeping concerns.

The Brazilian shot-stopper has been in inspired form in his second season with Roma, helping the Serie A side produce the current best defensive record in the league.

Alisson arrived in Italy from Internacional in July 2016 for €8m and has since overtaken Wojciech Szczęsny, now of Juventus, in the pecking order as well as establishing himself as Brazil’s first choice.

The 25-year-old is now a target for Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, according to Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, as translated by TeamTalk.

If reports of Liverpool’s interest are true, Jurgen Klopp will undoubtedly be hopeful of Mohamed Salah putting in a good word for the Reds, with the Egyptian having spent last season as teammates with Alisson.

The club’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper spells danger to the future of Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius, both of whom have failed to convince this campaign.

Familiar doubts loom over Mignolet’s ability to help Liverpool mount a title challenge, despite the Belgian’s strong run of form towards the end of the 2016/2017 campaign.

Though the former Sunderland man has teased gradual improvement over the last 12 months, he isn’t deemed as the world class keeper required to take the club to the next level.

Karius meanwhile has seen his progress flawed by obvious nerves and a difficulty both ironing out flaws and adapting to life in the Premier League.

With Klopp having strengthened the spine of his team with the signings of Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk, the next move will be to assess his goalkeeping situation.
