Liverpool want Atletico’s £100m Oblak, but have two backups – Independent

Liverpool are on the lookout for a new starting goalkeeper, the Independent’s chief football writer Miguel Delaney has claimed.

He states that Atletico Madrid’s world-class operator is the ‘ideal’ candidate to replace Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius, but suggests his £100m release-clause could be a problem.

The report says that if Oblak is unattainable, Liverpool will go for one of either Roma’s Brazilian international Allison or the talented Jack Butland at Stoke.

At Empire of the Kop, this is music to our ears.

One of the key differences under Jurgen Klopp between Liverpool and our rivals has been the quality of our goalkeeper.

Even on form, Mignolet doesn’t match up to Hugo Lloris, Thibaut Courtois or Ederson – and is lightyears behind David de Gea.

Oblak is sensational, but we fear the fee may prove prohibitive. Allison though is very good himself, currently keeping Ederson out of the Brazil XI – no mean feat.

Butland would very much be our third choice, but we recognise the Englishman has ability and the potential for big improvement.

The most important thing is though that Liverpool are ready to go big for a new keeper.

About time.
