LFC could go for German with no goals/no assists – Sky Sports journalist

Liverpool could take advantage of the fact Schalke have so far not been able to tie Max Meyer down to a new contract, reckons Sky Sports presenter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Reds are currently without a diminutive playmaker, having sold Coutinho to Barcelona for £142m over the weekend.

Adam Lallana is still rusty and the likes of Gini Wijnaldum, Emre Can or the currently injured Jordan Henderson do not have the creative spark needed in the middle of the park.

We’ve been linked to Thomas Lemar, but the Frenchman will be phenomenally expensive, with Monaco not keen on selling anyway.

“Meyer is an interesting one. He could sign a pre contract agreement now or Liverpool could pay some money now,” Sheth told the Transfer Talk podcast on Sky Sports.

Meyer began at Schalke as a tricky winger, but this season, has been used centrally as a deep-lying playmaker – exactly what Liverpool need.

He’s not been heralded nearly as much as his team-mate Leon Goretzka, who sadly appears to have chosen Bayern Munich over ourselves, but is undeniably talented.

However, his actual statistical return is pretty dire. Meyer’s not registered a goal or an assist in the Bundesliga this term, in comparison to Coutinho who scored 12 and made seven for his team-mates.

At 22, Meyer would be a decent option to bolster the squad, but from what we’ve seen, no more.

We’re not sure he’s a target anyway, in truth.
