Liverpool have reportedly taken initial steps in their pursuit of Napoli’s Jorginho as the club seeks to strengthen in midfield.

Jorginho has been touted as a priority summer target for the Reds, with Jurgen Klopp keen to add greater protection for his defence.

The Italian international has been a formidable base to Napoli’s talented attacking force this season, helping lead the club to the top of the Serie A table.

His all-action performances have dispersed as common knowledge across Europe, with a number of clubs having supposedly expressed an interest in the 26-year-old.

One of those being Liverpool, who have now made contact over a potential deal for Jorginho, according to UOL Esporte.

Liverpool’s search for midfield reinforcements could prove to stem from uncertainty over the future of Emre Can.

The 23-year-old’s current Anfield contract expires at the end of the season and he is expected to join Juventus on a free transfer, unless the Reds can reach an agreement with the German.

With negotiations over an extension having broken down, it’s only logical to prepare for life without the former Bayer Leverkusen man.

Jorginho’s versatility as a bullish defensive enforcer with the finesse to initiate attacks makes him well-suited in a Liverpool system that thrives on midfield link men overseeing a swift transition from defence to attack.

The acquisition of a player in Jorginho’s mould alongside the arrival of an elite goalkeeper would undoubtedly propel the Reds further into Premier League title contention next season.
