Jurgen Klopp couldn’t resist an opportunity to poke fun at Manchester United after Friday’s Champions League draw.
The German ironically joked over how United fans must feeling after seeing domestic foes Liverpool set up a quarter-final clash with close rivals Manchester City.
Jose Mourinho’s side crashed out of the competition on Wednesday night when they were beaten 2-1 by Sevilla at Old Trafford having produced a toothless response to the 0-0 first leg.
Discussing his side’s European opponents, Klopp told reporters: “I think it is an absolute dream draw – for Manchester United fans. I really don’t mind we will have plenty of time to prepare before then,” as reported by the Mirror.
“Yes so I didn’t expect anything I didn’t wish anything, I don’t think it’s good in the Champions’ League if you play against a team from own country, but at one point it’s pretty clear you will play them.”
Trying to anticipate a likely outcome seems futile when considering City’s 5-0 win in September and Liverpool’s 4-3 win in January’s corresponding Premier League fixture.
What is certain is the prospect of two sides heavily inclined to attack going head-to-head to outscore the other.
In a star-studded final eight, it is the two English teams that carry the potential to produce the most memorable contest.
Both sides will be well-prepared for a physically and tactically demanding game thanks to City’s push to secure the league title as soon as possible and Liverpool’s efforts to consolidate a top four spot. Peak competitiveness beckons.
