Liverpool centre-back unavailable for Crystal Palace clash

Liverpool will be without Dejan Lovren again when they travel to face Crystal Palace on Monday night.

The Croatian defender has been struggling with injury since returning to Melwood a week before the start of the new Premier League season.

Lovren was the final player to report for training after being granted an extended break having reached the World Cup final in Russia.

His fitness soon became the subject of controversy, with Liverpool supposedly unhappy at Lovren playing through injury whilst on duty for his country.

He will now miss the Reds’ visit to Selhurst Park with pelvis issue, as confirmed by Liverpoolfc.com.

The club have also reported that Joel Matip is back in contention to feature after recovering from a muscle injury he picked up during the pre-season defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Lovren’s absence and Matip’s lack of match fitness means there will be another start for Joe Gomez at centre-back following his impressive display against West Ham.

The Englishman has the opportunity to stake a claim for an extended run in the time beside Virgil van Dijk, who he has been tipped to become a long-term partner for.

Gomez will also play under the watchful eye of England manager Gareth Southgate as he considers his squad options ahead of September’s UEFA Nations League opener against Spain.

He had been in the running to earn a place in England’s World Cup squad until an injury during a friendly against the Netherlands back in March saw his hopes dashed.

The onus will now be on the 21-year-old to give the likes of Lovren and Matip a difficult route back into Jurgen Klopp’s starting lineup.
