Barcelona keen to sign Liverpool man in strange January transfer

Barcelona are reportedly lining up a move for Alberto Moreno as they seek to bolster their defensive strength in depth.

The Catalan giants remain in need of a backup to starting left-back Jordi Alba following Lucas Digne’s summer switch to Everton.

It may also be that Barca are beginning their search for a successor to 29-year-old Alba amid his current contract dispute with the club’s brass.

Were that the case, Moreno would certainly pose as an unusual candidate having managed just one appearance for Liverpool so far this season.

The Spaniard is being viewed as a cut-price option that Barcelona feel they would be able to sign as early as January, report Mundo Deportivo.

Moreno has seen his game time for Liverpool limited over the past year thanks to the outstanding form of Andrew Robertson.

The Spaniard had looked set to depart in summer 2017, before mounting an inspired resurgence during pre-season to reclaim a starting spot in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

He subsequently resigned Robertson to a frustrating spell as understudy over the opening months of the season following his move from Hull City.

An ankle injury in December soon cut short Moreno’s strong run of form and paved the way for Robertson to slot into the first eleven – from which he has since looked impossible to dislodge.

Moreno made his first appearance of the new season in the recent League Cup defeat to Chelsea, serving as one of the multiple players beaten by Eden Hazard during the Belgian’s stunning solo effort.

With opportunities looking increasingly difficult to come by, the 26-year-old could finally look to take his career elsewhere when his contract expires next June.
