Perfect centre-back target drops massive hint he could join Van Dijk at Liverpool

Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has done nothing to quash talk he could join the Reds in the summer – saying he would love to be lining up alongside Virgil van Dijk for club as well as country.

19-year-old De Ligt was superb for his side at the Bernabeu as Ajax knocked Real Madrid out of the Champions League earlier this week, and the likes of Barcelona and PSG have been linked with him.

Last year, he became the first defender to win the prestigious Golden Boy award.

Via Goal.com, the defender said: “Virgil [van Dijk] is a player who has experience in the top leagues. Of course, you would want to learn from him. It’s very helpful playing alongside him in the Dutch team.

“It could happen [joining Van Dijk at Liverpool]. He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I’m not focused on them. I focus on Ajax and then I’ll see where I end up.”

A central defender should certainly be near the top of any shopping list for the summer window given the injuries to Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren this season, and De Ligt simply has to be one of the top targets.
