LFC sign young goalkeeper for six-figure sum as ‘cover’

Liverpool have secured a talented young goalkeeper to bolster our youth ranks.

Ben Winterbottom has joined from Blackburn for a reported £350k fee, according to Football Insider.

Liverpool U18s manager Barry Lewtas has claimed the club decided on Winterbottom as the current youngsters available between the sticks are crocked!

“Ben was available and with the injuries we’ve got, it’s about making sure we have enough cover. He’s a good boy and has settled in really well. He’s a positive character around the dressing room. He has trained well and will prove to be a good addition to the squad,” he told the Echo, after Liverpool made the stopper’s trial permanent.

The 17-year-old will look to improve behind the scenes and will not be in first-team contention for some time, of course.

Right now, Liverpool have Simon Mignolet as backup to Alisson, but we reckon the Belgian will look for a permanent exit this summer – given his age and the impossibility of him dislodging the Brazilian between the sticks.

As a result, we’ll either have to bring in a new backup option or promote one of our youngsters.

Kamil Grabara is the most advanced right now – and we wouldn’t necessarily be averse to him becoming the reserve stopper – having been very impressed with what he’s done for the U23s.
