Reds remain linked with summer move for promising Championship defender

Paul Joyce’s summary of the Reds’ approaching transfer window in The Times names Bristol City’s left-back Lloyd Kelly as a potential arrival at Anfield this summer.

“Liverpool scouts, along with a number of other top-flight sides including Arsenal and Southampton, have checked on Bristol City left back Lloyd Kelly”, he writes

“The England Under-21 starlet can also play at centre half. Andrew Robertson has developed into one of Europe’s best left backs, but someone with potential and who can play in more than one position would appeal.”

While Kelly could obviously step into the fold and provide capable, if inexperienced, understudy duties to the Scot, the 20-year-old will come at a sizeable cost for a defender who only has one Championship season under his belt.

Equally, the Bristol Post have been keen to put a brake on the rumour today as it gathers increasing momentum with Reds fans.

“Now, there’s no denying Kelly is extremely talented and destined for big things,” they claim, “but joining the dots between Liverpool scouting the 20-year-old and actually placing a £12m bid, never mind it being agreed, seems, as we see it, a stretch. At least for now.”

Robbo has produced some absolutely incredible performances to make the left-back spot his own after arriving from Hull City for £8 million two years ago. Kelly, were he to sign for the Reds, would be making do with cup competition cameos and the odd league appearance.

That said, like Joe Gomez’s signing from Charlton, Kelly’s defensive versatility and his physical attributes could make him a very canny buy indeed.
