Italian report: Reds ready to bid for world-class defender

Posted by

Liverpool are lining up a move for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports in Italy from Calciomercato.

With Dejan Lovren interesting AC Milan, the Reds might be in the market for another defender this summer, but if Jurgen Klopp was to spend a colossal amount of money on one player, it would surely be more likely to be Matthijs de Ligt?

It would take a fee of more than £100 million according to the report, which seems highly unlikely to materialise.

As good as Koulibaly is, the same wage issues apply to him as they do with De Ligt. If the centre-back was to come in for a huge fee, he would demand enormous wages to match – and the Reds simply would not break their wage structure for one player.

If Koulibaly was to come in on more money than anyone else, suddenly players like Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane would all rightly want a pay rise.

You can never 100% rule anything out, but we think it’s safe to say this one will not be happening.
