Liverpool legend on shortlist to replace outgoing Premier League manager

Steven Gerrard is on Newcastle United’s shortlist to replace the outgoing Rafael Benitez, along with Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira and Mikel Arteta, according to the Telegraph.

It was announced earlier this week that Rafa would be relieving himself of his duties at Newcastle, and reportedly has an offer on the table from a Chinese Super League club.

Gerrard has had a successful stint at Rangers manager in the Scottish Premier League, but the Magpies are said to be confident that the Liverpool legend would finish up in Scotland to join them.

Newcastle appear to be looking at youthful options for their next manager as the same Telegraph report that they’re also considering Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe, but do have Sean Dyche and Steve Bruce seen as fallback options at this stage.

Gerrard recently picked up Sheyi Ojo on loan from Liverpool for Rangers – so it’d be fair to assume that leaving the club was not something he was considering.

The former Liverpool skipper has previously talked about one day managing his boyhood club – so it’d also be fair to assume that staying at Rangers forever is not something he would consider.

Today, I am very happy to be at Rangers and happy to do this job. I want to give the best of myself for Rangers,” Gerrard told France Football (via Sport Witness).

But nobody knows the future – Liverpool is a very special place for me. One day, maybe it will happen.
