Liverpool set to hash out contract with experienced midfielder

Liverpool are keen to reward 33-year-old James Milner with a new contract at the club, according to the Liverpool Echo.

There has been an outcry from fans on social media for the Reds to sign somebody, and the announcement of Sepp van den Berg just hasn’t cut it.

It’s difficult to imagine that a new contract being agreed for Milner would appease the appetite, but the experienced midfielder is a crucial part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

The German has described Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a ‘new player’, and fair enough, it will feel that way next season – the same goes for Rhian Brewster, Adam Lallana and Joe Gomez.

Manchester City have recently confirmed the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri, Man United have Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Chelsea have added Christian Pulisic to their ranks.

It’s easy to see why some fans feel a little jaded, but the Reds have just won the Champions League and are probably more interested in tying current players down instead of searching for new talent.

Liverpol did complete the signing of van den Berg recently, and Bayern Munich and Ajax were desperate to sign the Netherlands U23s star, but van den Berg has been convinced to link up with fellow countrymen at Virgil van Dijk, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ki-Jana Hoever at Anfield.

Given the age of van den Berg, it’s safe to say that he’d be one for the future. His 20 senior appearances for Zwolle last season won’t go unnoticed though, and Jurgen Klopp may be willing to give him a chance in one of the domestic cups this upcoming season.
