Reds could land highly-rated Spain U21 winger from Xabi Alonso’s boyhood club

The Mirror (via Marca) have linked the Reds with the signing of Real Sociedad’s 22-year-old winger, Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored 13 goals for the Basque side in La Liga this season.

Mainly playing on the left wing, but also capable of operating on the right, Oyarzabal even featured down the middle in this summer’s UEFA U21 Euros for Spain scoring twice for La Rojita and registering an assist in the final as they beat Germany.

Of course, former Red, Xabi Alonso, has just taken up a position managing Real Sociedad B, though there’s no sense that this transfer rumour and his appointment are linked in anyway.

Although, of course, John Aldridge also played for the club from 1989-1991 making him the first non-Basque player to sign for Sociedad.

Another Sociedad legend, Alberto Lopez, spoke to Marca and mentioned the young Basque forward as someone who “does not have much time left at Real Sociedad, he has a lot of talent and I think there could be at a big team like Chelsea or Liverpool.”

Speculation about his future has seen his name added to the long list of players associated with a move to the champions of Europe.

That said, there’s no doubting his talent. In 2017, Guillem Balague mentioned him in a five-player shortlist of La Liga talent outside of the Barcelona-Real Madrid duopoly, comparing him to Antonie Griezmann.

With Jürgen Klopp and the Reds out in the United States for the rest of the pre-season tour, it remains to be seen what will happen with any potential transfers.
