It is very rare that a defender wins the Ballon d’Or, and even rarer that a goalkeeper achieves that feat.
In Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, though, the Reds have two very worthy contenders for the 2019 award.
The Dutchman is the leading contender – not just from the Liverpool contingent, including Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, but out of every player in the world including Lionel Messi – though Alisson simply has to be up there as well.
Some of the saves that he made last year were exceptional. Even the ones that look routine come about because of his expert positioning making them much easier than they would otherwise have been.
The video below shows exactly why the Brazilian number one is being spoken about so highly. If it wasn’t for the save against Napoli at Anfield, the Reds would have been in the Europa League and Madrid would never have happened.

Having had Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius between the sticks for years, Alisson has genuinely been a game-changer in the year since he arrived at the club.
There isn’t any better goalkeeper in world football right now – and if he does win the Ballon d’Or, you can add all the outfield players to that statement too.
Van Dijk remains in pole position – but Alisson is not far behind him.
