Liverpool have signed Andy Lonergan for the season, reports the Echo.
The veteran goalkeeper was playing for Rochdale last term, but will now pen terms with Liverpool and be Adrian’s first-choice backup while Alisson is injured.
As a result, Lonergan will be on the bench for the Super Cup game with Chelsea on Wednesday.
Aged 35, this is by far the most exciting move of Lonergan’s career and one that quite literally nobody expected him to make at the beginning of the summer.
It’s unlikely he’s ever going to feature, although there’s a chance Jurgen Klopp will rest Adrian in the EFL Cup and give the Englishman a full Liverpool debut.
The thought of that slightly worries us, in truth, but we really just need to support both of our new stoppers and wait patiently for Alisson’s return.
The brilliant Brazilian is one of the first names on our team-sheet and we simply have to hope his calf injury isn’t going to keep him out for too long.
