Sadio Mane: the most wholesome footballer on the planet!
The Senegalese scored two in our Super Cup victory over Chelsea on Wednesday night, but when praised for his sensational performance – wanted to give credit to his team-mate Roberto Firmino instead.
“To be honest, I think I was just a lucky boy,” Mane told UEFA, cited in GOAL.
“I think all the credit should go to my team-mates, especially Bobby [Firmino] – he could have scored but he preferred to give it to me.
“I think this is how we play at Liverpool. We play for each other and we always enjoy playing for each other and to give each other passes. I think that makes us strong.”
The attitude Mane discusses is why Liverpool enjoyed such collective success last term.
On plenty of occasions, the Reds put their bodies on the lines and fought against adversity to pull us through difficult situations – most notably during our run to Champions League glory.
We also racked up 97 points in the Premier League, of course, but it wasn’t enough to secure the title with ruthlessly brilliant Manchester City in the running.
Hopefully, this season will be different – although we’ll have to rely on Liverpool being practically perfect and some other teams actually turning up against Pep Guardiola’s outfit – which they did so rarely at the end of 2018/19.
