Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has insisted fans need not worry about goalkeeper Adrian after his howler against Southampton which led to former player Danny Ings scoring.
The Reds won the game 2-1, which is all that really matters, but the Spaniard raised a few eyebrows when he tried to play out a pass that struck the Englishman before ricocheting into the net.
If we recall, Alisson did something similar last season and went on the secure three Golden Glove awards. While I’m not suggesting the former West Ham stopper is destined for the same – I do think we can afford him a break.
That’s a sentiment Wijnaldum is likely to echo as he says Adrian’s reaction to the mistake is more important than the error itself.
“Those kind of things can happen with a goalkeeper,” the Dutch international is quoted as saying by the Express. “Last season it happened to Alisson against Leicester City and in a pre-season friendly.
“How is he going to react to the mistake? I think that is more important than the mistake itself.
“Everyone can make a mistake, also a goalkeeper. But the only thing is, he is a goalkeeper, and if he makes a mistake, a lot of times, it will result in a goal.”
Gini is spot on – if a midfielder makes a mistake then a defender will be tasked with mopping up the mess, but if a goalkeeper makes a mistake then it’s all on him.
Adrian made a mistake against Southampton, there is no two ways about it, but we should forget about it and move on – hopefully he does the same.
