Wolves star Diogo Jota has spoken to the press ahead of the midlands’ club’s fixture against Manchester United, and he hasn’t held back.
The forward claims that United risk losing potential fans to Liverpool and Man City, after the Red Devils have now gone six years since winning the Premier League title.
“Of course Man United will always be a great team,” Jota told Birmingham Live. “But when City and Liverpool are winning titles, they have more fans supporting them in Portugal.
“It has to do with the moment and we have to be honest and say that Liverpool is having a better moment right now than Man United.
“Everyone likes winners and when the younger fans look at other countries, they like to see a team that is winning like Man City and Liverpool.”
The Portuguese talent is surely trying to rattle United’s cage here, but he isn’t wrong. New fans to the sport will go where the trophies are.
Just look at City’s rise of the last ten years; their fan-base is growing exponentially, and it’s not because of their history.
If you wanted to pick a successful club from the North West to support, you’d go to one of the three historic clubs – Liverpool, Everton or United.
But it’s not about honours picked up in the 90s or 00s – it’s about trophies that are getting lifted each year, and United’s biggest rivals have picked up two of the biggest just last season.
