Fresh twist in Reds transfer saga as Manchester United man agrees move

Dejan Lovren’s move to AS Roma could be on the rocks as Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is on the verge of signing for the Italian giants on loan, according to a reliable Italian journalist.

There is the possibilty that both Smalling and Lovren could move to Italy, while AC Milan have also been linked with a move for the 30-year-old Croatian centre-back, but it seems that Roma could have identified an alternative.

Liverpool wanted around £20 million to let Lovren leave, so signing Smalling on loan for a relatively small fee could be seen as a decent option. He’s not as good as Lovren, but the finances of the deal make sense.

Earlier today, we reported that in Croatia, the feeling was that Lovren’s move to Serie A was done, but perhaps that is not the case.

For the Reds, it would be a good thing if Lovren does stay given the lack of cover should Joe Gomez, Joel Matip or Virgil van Dijk pick up an injury.
