According to the Express, Liverpool are set to face competition from Premier League rivals Everton and Chelsea for Wigan youngster Joe Gelhardt.
The starlet was previously touted as a replacement for Bobby Duncan for the Reds, according to renowned GOAL reporter Neil Jones, after the teenager moved on from Fiorentina in the summer.
Gelhardt already has two goals in five appearances for the Three Lions at an U16 level so it’s easy to see why he’s caught the eye.
He is a left-footed striker, who can play anywhere in a front three, and has a contract with Wigan until 2021, but the Reds have plucked talented players from lower clubs before.
Growing up a Liverpool fan, it’s hard to imagine a world in which Gelhardt wouldn’t leap at the chance to join up with one of the Reds’ youth sides, ahead of Chelsea and Everton.
Chelsea are perhaps the club that we’d have to be more weary of, in the pursuit of Gelhardt, but he could view Everton as a better place for him to hone his skills and break into the first team.
Jurgen Klopp has shown he invests in younger players, with the addition of Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott, so I’d keep yours eyes peeled!
