It certainly looks to be a two-horse race for the 21-year-old, with the Daily Mirror confirming that we will go head-to-head with Manchester United over his signature.

However, with the Old Trafford side reportedly closing in on a deal for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan (via Sky Sports), there is a possibility that their attentions could be divided and distracted.

The Mirror states that Depay made the trip on Thursday when he jetted to Manchester airport with his advisors Kees Ploegsma and Kees Vos. This initially sparked speculation that he was on route to United, but that now appears to be false.

It was instead Anfield officials that Depay was supposedly meeting, including Ian Ayre, who he met in a nearby hotel.

The youngster has scored 26 goals in 37 games for PSV so far this season, sparking a host of interest in acquiring his services. His recent success directly follows his performances at last summer’s World Cup, where he scored twice on route to the semi-finals.

He’d certainly be a fine addition to Brendan Rodgers’ side and one that would offer up a sign of intent ahead of next season, proving that we are still capable of attracting the world’s very best.
