Three headline omissions from LFC’s Champions League squad

Liverpool have raised plenty of questions after revealing their final Champions League squad, which cannot be changed until the round of 16.

Nathaniel Clyne is a notable absentee as he continues to recover from a back injury that has seen him sidelined since the club’s opening pre-season game against Tranmere Rovers.

His continued unavailability has sparked fears amongst Reds that what first appeared an innocuous injury, is in fact something more serious.

Clyne’s omission promises valuable experience on European club football’s biggest stage for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has impressed as Liverpool’s starting right-back so far this season.

Joe Gomez is also likely to be given more opportunities having already been used by Jurgen Klopp in key Premier League games.

Lazar Markovic also misses out after surprisingly staying at the club beyond Thursday’s transfer deadline, following a summer of speculation hinting at his certain departure.

It remains to be seen what plans Klopp has for the Serbian, who has failed to convince since arriving on Merseyside in 2014 and, subsequently, been sent out on loan three times.

Striker Danny Ings is another player who will not be involved, as he continues to be eased back into senior football by the club having recently recovered from his second season-ending knee injury in two years with the Reds.

Philippe Coutinho is an unsurprising inclusion after failing to secure a summer move to Barcelona, whilst Adam Lallana has also been named in the squad, despite being expected to be ruled out for another two months due to injury.

Sheyi Ojo and Ryan Kent have both also been named as part of the squad, despite leaving on loan deals for Fulham and Freiburg, respectively.

On top of the 25, Liverpool have also been able to name an unlimited number of players born after January 1, 1996.

The squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Simon Mignolet, Loris Karius, Danny Ward

Defenders: Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez, Ragnar Klavan, Alberto Moreno, Andy Robertson, Joel Matip, Jon Flanagan, Conor Masterson, Trent Alexander-Arnold
