Liverpool’s best left-back of the Premier League era, John Arne Riise, has picked the best XI he played with while in red.
The Norwegian explained his selection to the Echo, which naturally includes himself in the back four!
And there’s a few surprising picks…
Instead of picking club legend Carragher in his favoured centre-back position, Riise chose him at right-back ahead of Steve Finnan, so as to accommodate Daniel Agger alongside Sami Hyypia in defence.
He also went for Javi Mascherano over Didi Hamann, selecting Steven Gerrard (surprised he got in, actually) and Xabi Alonso either side.
Riise’s ‘joker’ is Luis Garcia at no.10, with the mercurial cult-hero often left out of this kind of thing.
Up top, he went with the frightening pace and finishing skills of Fernando Torres and Michael Owen.
It’s some XI!
By early calculations, nearly all would get into Liverpool’s team now, although we’d find spots for Sadio Mane and Coutinho.
Riise’s Team (4-4-2): Reina; Carrgaher, Hyypia, Agger, Riise; Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Garcia; Torres, Owen.
