Liverpool defender Kolo Toure has backed Emre Can to become Liverpool captain, despite Jordan Henderson being widely tipped to take the armband from Steven Gerrard when the Reds legend leaves the club this summer.

Toure believes the 21-year-old can become the ‘king of the Kop’ after making an impressive start to his Anfield career, starring as both a defender and in his more natural position of central midfield.

The experienced Ivorian defender has been signing the praises of the German youth team international this week, describing him as the pick of Brendan Rodgers’ summer signings, as well as a natural leader who will continue to grow.

Toure, who was quoted by the Daily Mirror, said: “He’s a leader. When you’re on the pitch, you can see that by the way he plays. He is really confident and he talks on the pitch as well.

“Right now, Jordan Henderson is very good, but there’s no doubt this boy is going to be a king here. He is a top player, who can make a difference in games. He can score goals, his work-rate is amazing and there is no better player.”

Can, a £9.75m summer signing from Bayer Leverkusen, has become a firm fan favourite over recent months, inspiring Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the calender year, as well as a rapid rise up the Premier League table.

Henderson has been equally impressive in recent weeks, but Toure thinks Can would make the ideal leader: “He’s young, but he’s a top player. He has been playing outstandingly at the back and in midfield, he’s a very strong player. We like him here.

“He’s from Germany and German players are really good. I’m not surprised by how well he’s doing. They learn football and they are really intelligent, tactically outstanding and really strong.”
