Respected Echo journalist Ian Doyle has revealed that Brendan Rodgers rejected the chance to bring Sadio Mane to the club two years ago.

Doyle writes that Mane was heavily scouted by the club, but Rodgers choose to ignore the staffs’ advice and was thus left with little wriggle room when the transfer committee decided to take a £16 million gamble on Italian misfit Mario Balotelli.

Mane ultimately signed for Southampton later that same summer.

Doyle also reports that Mane is a player whom Klopp was extremely interested in during his time at Dortmund.

Klopp watched the player developed at Red Bull Salzburg and wanted to bring him to Germany, but the deal never materialised.

Now Klopp has his man. Let’s hope the wait has been worth it.
