Transfer blow as wage offer convinces Liverpool target to move elsewhere

Piotr Zielinski looked on the verge of a Liverpool switch a while ago, but it appears as though Napoli may now beat us to the punch, according to Italian publication La Repubblica (via the Echo).

The Polish international has been very vocal about wanting to join Liverpool, and has even gone as far as to promise Liverpool fans that he’d be making the switch this summer (via the Daily Star). The report from Italy suggests he’ll be unable (or unwilling) to keep that promise however, as Napoli are going to win the race for his signature.

As the Echo states, we’ve already had a bid for the 22-year-old rejected, while Napoli’s bid – of £11.75m just like ours – has been accepted, as they included a player in part exchange. Even if we were to up our offer it may not help though, as the report goes on to state that Napoli’s increased wage offer will swap his decision.

There is no news of how much either club are willing to offer, merely that the Serie A side have gazumped us in the wages department. Despite the player seemingly wanting to make a move to the Premier League, money may talk once again, and convince him to remain in Italy rather than making the move to England. We’re not entirely convinced by the report, but there have certainly been questions raised over the likelihood transfer in recent days.
