Liverpool linked with Barcelona star after injury crisis hits

Jurgen Klopp is apparently looking at the possibility of bringing Barcelona’s versatile defender Jeremy Mathieu to Anfield, with the French veteran potentially available this summer (via the Echo). We’ve rather unfortunately been hit by a bit of an injury crisis in pre-season, with both Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez suffering injuries in the build up to the 2016/17 campaign (via The Telegraph).

The same report suggests these injuries will force Klopp to dip his toes back into the transfer market for a new centre-back, with a host of players already being linked with a Liverpool switch.

Mathieu has now emerged as a top target, with a writer for La Parisien revealing that contact was being made between the player and ourselves.

Turkish side Besiktas have already made a bid, but the 32-year-old would apparently prefer a move to the Premier League (unsurprisingly). He wouldn’t necessarily be guaranteed the same game time, but it would mean more time playing at a top club rather than taking what is arguably a fairly sizeable step down to the Turkish league.

Given his age it’s perhaps a little questionable whether he’s the right signing, and there may well be better options out there. He’s likely to only be a back-up until we get a few players back from injury though, so he might not be a bad temporary fix.
