Former BBC journalist Ben Smith believes our move for Georginio Wijnaldum is well and truly on, hinting that we’d be getting a deal done for the Newcastle United man this week.
The reliable journalist took to Twitter to suggest we were in for a very busy week, with a deal in excess of £20m in the works for the Dutch midfielder.

There are plenty of reports linking us with the 25-year-old, and the story has really picked up steam overnight. Stories in the Echo suggest we could end up paying up to £25m for the versatile star, with a deal set to be done soon.
Wijnaldum is certainly a talented player and was unquestionably the standout performer for a very poor Newcastle United side last season. It’s questionable whether he fits into our current side though, as we already have plenty of players operating in his favoured position.
Liverpool transfer news
He’s versatile enough to play all over the pitch though, so perhaps Jurgen Klopp has big plans for the goalscoring midfielder. We’ve trusted his judgement so far in the transfer window, and although he hasn’t generally been looking at already established names, he’s clearly building a squad in his image.
