Liverpool U23s lose on penalties despite a Ben Woodburn brace

Posted by

Our U23 side lost 5-4 on penalties to a Brentford ‘B’ side in a friendly this evening.

Brentford led 2-0 just after half-time, but Ben Woodburn scored twice in five minutes to force a shootout.

Toni Gomes had already spurned an easy chance to put us 1-0 ahead with a header when Brentford took the lead through Herson Rodrigues Alves.

Danny Parish added the second for the hosts and it wasn’t until after that goal that we seemed to come alive.

Woodburn’s first was somewhat lucky as the Brentford keeper misjudged his dive and saw the ball bounce over him, but the second was a lovely finish at the far post after bamboozling the defenders with his skills.

Brad Garton could have won the game for us in the shootout but smashed his effort off the post. Joe Maguire was the unlucky man who cost us the game as his effort was saved.
