James Milner explains why Liverpool are playing so well this season

James Milner has revealed why he thinks we are playing so well this season.

The former England international has become a mainstay of the side at left-back after Alberto Moreno’s poor performance on the opening day at Arsenal saw him dropped from the eleven.

The competition certainly is fierce, especially in midfield. Henderson, Lucas, Can, Wijnaldum, Grujic, Lallana, and arguably Milner himself are fighting over a couple of spots.

Up front things are just as congested. Our depth chart shows Sturridge, Firmino, Ings, Origi, Coutinho, and Mane all fighting over a couple of spots.

And all that is before you consider any youth players who are starting to knock on the door.

“You look down the squad list and the quality is unbelievable,” Milner said (official site)

“You see the bench and some boys have been injured, some players aren’t in the squad, and the young boys who are knocking around the squad with such quality. It’s pleasing.

“And you know if you don’t perform, the shirt is going to be taken off you and someone else is going to get the chance. And you don’t know how long they are going to have that shirt for.

“You need that competition for places to drive each other on. Hopefully we can keep improving as a team.”

Milner was on target twice yesterday, with both goals coming from penalties. It means he continues his impressive record of never losing a Premier League game in which he has scored.

Perhaps we should start playing him up front?!
