Henderson says LFC training so brutal ‘midweek rest’ is total myth

Some of Liverpool’s rivals this season have claimed our early success is because we haven’t had European competition to deal with.

This is madness of course – neither have plenty of Premier League clubs – and we’d much rather be in the Champions League if it were offered to us!

But according to captain Jordan Henderson, the intensity of Jurgen Klopp’s midweek sessions are just as hard as a match would be anyway.

Although the Englishman, perhaps the best central midfielder in the country so far this campaign, has admitted that extra tactical work during the match intensity sessions has been beneficial.

“It’s definitely not rest,” Henderson categorically told Sky Sports.

“It’s all about preparing. We get more training sessions and that’s really helping us. We’ve really benefited from that this season as we’re preparing the whole week for most of the games. We’re looking at the set up and how we want to play against that particular team.

“On those days when other teams might be playing in Europe we are working like it’s a match-day in terms of intensity on those Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It’s hard work but we’re also doing tactical work too. That’s been very beneficial.”

Henderson, who leads the league in passes and ground covered this term, will lead his side out against Watford on Sunday – knowing a win will guarantee we’re at least joint-top of the table when we return from another irritating international break.
