Gini Wijnaldum gives clash of the titans feel to Liverpool’s New Year’s Eve meeting with Manchester City

The New Year’s Eve clash with Manchester City at Anfield is a game we have all been thinking about for the last month.

Not only is it a game that gives us the chance to put some distance between ourselves and Pep Guardiola’s side, but it is a game that gives us a chance to remind the rest of the league that we are to be taken seriously.

Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has set the tone for an explosive attacking game by highlighting the quality both teams possess. The Dutch international is also very wary though that the season isn’t decided by Saturday’s game.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “It’s two teams that want to attack and score goals so it’s going to be an interesting game.”

“We both have players who can win games for their team. They have to look at our players and we have to look at theirs.”

“Of course Aguero is a wonderful player. He can win the game on his own for Manchester City so he’s one of the threats we have to deal with. But it’s not only Aguero, you also have to stop De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling… you can go on.”

“The season is long. You can’t control other things and other games will come after Manchester City.”

Manchester City do have a host of highly talented attacking stars, but so do we. Jurgen Klopp’s men have proven they are capable of dissecting and breaching the best defensive sides in the league and will already be in the minds of the City’s back line.

We always enjoy seeing a good footballing contest and a meeting between Liverpool and Manchester City usually promises that.
