Mo Salah’s brilliant injury record should delight Liverpool fans

A characteristic in judging the worth of a player should always be how injury-prone they are, or are not.

The world’s best players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, very rarely miss significant time on the sidelines. They all play 50 games per season and peak at the right times.

But Liverpool suffered a rasp of injuries this season just gone which effectively messed up our title challenge. We lost Coutinho when he was flying, had to consistently change our centre-back pairing of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren due to one of them being unavailable, and Sadio Mane at a key time too. Not to mention Jordan Henderson’s four month absence and Adam Lallana’s inability to return from international duty fit.

So with Liverpool on the verge of securing a £35m deal for Roma’s Mo Salah (Telegraph), how many games does the Egyptian miss injured?

The answer, thankfully, is very little.

Since the 2012/13 season, when he was at Basel, Salah has missed just 18 games injured in all competitions. That’s about three and a half games per campaign for the past five seasons.

Here’s the breakdown, as provided by Transfermarkt:

In the same time, Coutinho, our best player, has missed 39 games, and he isn’t considered especially injury prone – demonstrating that Salah is available the vast majority of the time.

Let’s hope that continues when the 24-year-old pulls on Red in 2017/18.
