Instead of congratulating Dominic Solanke on making his England debut last night, Matt Le Tissier questioned whether he should be in the squad at all.
Gareth Southgate chose a young, experimental group for the 0-0 draws with Germany and Brazil, which also included Joe Gomez – with Liverpool regulars Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Daniel Sturridge dropped.
Solanke came off the bench against Brazil last night and did pretty well, providing dynamism and work-rate up top.
But Le Tiss wasn’t impressed.
Never thought I’d see the day a player gets capped by his country before he starts a career league game!

In fairness, it does somewhat diminish the prestige of an England cap when a striker without a Premier League goal or a start gets one.
But from a former player, this isn’t especially helpful, and we’d be very surprised if he’d have said this about a Southampton forward.
We just hope Solanke can prove him wrong long-term and go on to become a Liverpool and England regular.
