Jamie Carragher says if Virgil van Dijk was a tennis player, he’d be Roger Federer.
Speaking to Sky Sports before Liverpool host Manchester United, he said: “He’s had a massive impact. Every time someone plays alongside him, they look like a top player.
“When you’re speaking to him, the actual size of him – it’s almost like when you see Federer play tennis. Everything just looks easy – he’s just there.
“He’s like the Federer of football – everything feels like he’s got another gear. If he needs to be extended, you know that other gear is there.”
Hopefully, that next gear will not be needed against Manchester United this afternoon, but Carragher makes an excellent point.
Van Dijk has transformed the way the Reds play and he deserves each and every bit of the praise he receives. Just when we thought all the ways of describing him had been exhausted, Carragher’s come up with another!
